5 ways to relax your mind yet productive while working from home.
- 8 min reading time
Working from home can be tough. You're on your own, and you have no boss or colleagues to distract you from work. Plus, there's no one around to steal your lunch out of the break room fridge because they just want some food too! However, life doesn't have to be so solitary when working from home. There are lots of ways to make sure that you stay productive while avoiding distractions and staying healthy as well as organized. Here are some tips:
Start with the basics.
The first step to relaxing your mind while working from home is to set up a designated work area. A chair and desk, or couch and table are all you need. The point of this is to create an environment that's conducive to productivity--and not just any old place will do. Make sure your desk is clean and tidy, with no clutter on top of it; if you have piles of papers on the floor next to your desk or in another part of your house (or even in another room), try keeping them organized into logical piles so that when one gets too high-up again (as they always do), you'll know where they belong when it comes time for filing again later down the road!
Your chair should also be comfortable enough so that when you sit down at 9AM sharp every morning without fail without complaining about how much pain has accumulated over the course of sleeping on an old mattress last night (or worse yet: waking up early!), then there might be something wrong: either with how much money was spent on said mattress; or perhaps even worse still--with yourself!
Set up a designated work area.
One of the best ways to stay focused while working from home is to have a designated work area. This is especially important if you're using your living room as your office space, as this can be distracting for family members who want to watch TV or listen to music.
If you don't have any extra rooms in your house that aren't being used for something else (like storage), consider setting up an area in one corner of the living room where you can focus solely on getting things done.
Here's what we recommend putting in your designated work area:
-
A desk or table - somewhere sturdy enough so that it doesn't wobble when typing on a laptop/computer keyboard
-
Computer monitor(s) - one large screen monitor is preferable over two smaller ones because it makes multitasking easier (but if having two monitors works better for you then go ahead!)
Become a morning person.
There is a lot of pressure to be an early riser. It's seen as a sign of productivity and discipline, but it can also be the difference between getting things done and feeling like you're constantly behind. In addition to helping us get more done in less time, waking up earlier gives us more time in which our minds are clear--and that means better focus on whatever task we have at hand.
An easy way to start making yourself an early riser? Set multiple alarms throughout the night so they go off every hour or two (or even more often). That way, when your body wakes up naturally around 5 AM or 6 AM (or whenever), you'll feel refreshed rather than groggy from being woken up by an alarm clock!
Eat right, live right (and follow the 80/20 rule).
You're not going to get much work done if your stomach is growling, or if you're too tired to keep your eyes open. Take care of yourself by making sure that you're eating right, getting enough sleep and exercising regularly.
This is easier said than done when working from home--but it's important! Eating well on a budget can be tough (especially when delivery food is so easy), but it doesn't have to be impossible: try looking up recipes online or checking out cookbooks at the library or bookstore. You might also consider signing up for a meal plan service such as Blue Apron or Hello Fresh; these services send fresh ingredients directly to you each week so all that's left is preparation! These services usually cost between $60-$80 per week which works out at about $4-$5 per meal--not bad compared with restaurant prices!
Getting enough sleep can also be difficult when working from home because often times there are no set hours for us as freelancers; however there are things we can do like setting alarms throughout the day so we know exactly when our work day starts/ends."
It's important to take care of yourself physically, mentally and emotionally so that you can be at your best when working from home. You might also consider getting out of the house now and then--even if it's just for coffee with a friend or to walk the dog!
Take breaks and get outside.
When you're working from home and it's all just a little bit too much, take a break. A short one, even!
-
Schedule your day so that you're not spending hours at a time staring at a screen. Take breaks throughout the day and get outside for fresh air if possible.
-
If you can't go outside, open up some windows or turn on some fans to let the fresh air in your house. You'll feel better when you do this; trust me!
-
Make sure to eat healthy snacks throughout the day (nuts are great) so that hunger doesn't lead to unhealthy eating later on (which will make it harder for us all).
Stay organized and on time.
While staying organized is a must, it can be difficult to keep track of all the things you need to do. To stay on top of your to-do list and get things done, try one or all of these methods:
-
Use a calendar and reminders. If you're looking for an app that helps you manage appointments, events and tasks (and maybe even reminds yuou about them), look no further than Google Calendar. You can set up repeating events like weekly yoga classes or monthly lunches with friends in no time at all! Plus there are tons of third-party apps that integrate with Google Calendar so that if something comes up last minute--like when someone calls off from work unexpectedly--you'll know right away without having to scramble around trying find an open spot in your schedule."
-
Use a task manager app such as Trello or Anydo.. "Task managers allow users organize their life into lists by creating columns based on different contexts (work vs home) which allows them separate projects into categories while still keeping everything together under one roof."
Put down your phone and turn it off when you're done working for the day.
If you are like me, then you might think it is a good idea to keep your phone with you at all times. After all, it's so convenient and useful! But there are some downsides to always having your phone within reach.
For example, one study found that people who spend more time on their phones have poorer sleep quality than those who don't use their phones as much during the day (Lee et al., 2018). Turns out that when we look at our phones late into the night or early in the morning before going to bed, this can cause problems with falling asleep quickly and staying asleep through the night--which means less time for relaxing!
Being able to put down our phones allows us to relax more easily because there won't be any distractions from them (or anything else). We can focus only on what matters: ourselves!
Working from home requires a little extra self-care to keep your mind healthy and stress-free.
When you're working from home, it's important to take care of yourself. Self-care isn't just a nice thing to do--it's actually necessary for your well-being. If you don't take care of yourself and your mind, how can you expect to take care of others?
There are lots of small things that we can do to make ourselves feel better when we're stressed out or stressed up about something:
-
Take a walk outside (or even around the block)
-
Read a book in bed with some tea or coffee
-
Go outside for fresh air when possible (even if only for 10 minutes)
Conclusion
So, the next time you're working from home and feeling stressed out, try one of these tips. You'll be surprised how much better they can make you feel!
